Do you have an Emergency Envelope?

What’s one easy, practical thing you can do for you and your family right now?

Prepare an “Emergency Envelope.”

An Emergency Envelope is a packet of documents that you or a family member could grab in an urgent rush out the door to seek medical care.

This is an important preparation under our circumstances today when the course of a Covid-19 infection can change so dramatically and quickly.

What should be in this Emergency Envelope?

  • Copy of your Advance Health Care Directive
  • Copy of any separate HIPPA Authorizations
  • Copy of your health insurance card
  • List of your known medical conditions
  • List of your medications and dosages
  • Contact information for your health care agent(s)
  • Location of your original estate planning documents

Once assembled, take a look at your Advance Health Care Directive and HIPPA Authorizations to make sure they still represent your wishes. Is the right health care agent listed? Are the right people authorized to get information about your health condition?

Put the Emergency Envelope in a safe place in your home and let your family and/or friends know about it and its location. You might consider putting it somewhere totally obvious or totally odd (like your freezer) so that it is easy to remember and locate in a pinch.

Finally, after you have created your own Emergency Envelope, think about the other important people in your life. Do they have one? Encourage friends and family members to make their own and let you know where it is located.
